TEM/EDS Electron Microscopy Lab Services

At MVA Scientific Consultant’s Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) labs, we provide analytical TEM imaging, selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) services. Our focus is to offer value and high quality data in a timely manner. MVA’s analytical TEM labs provide world-class TEM analysis services for advanced materials, including semiconductors, polymers, nanoparticles and nanotubes, glass and environmental particulate.

Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) uses an electron beam to image a sample that is less than roughly 100 nanometers thick. TEM analysis offers the highest resolution of any available analytical technique. At MVA, our 200kv TEM can provide image resolution of a few Angstroms. MVA also provides TEM SAED analysis to characterize the crystallographic phase and crystallographic orientation of a material.

One of the most important steps prior to TEM analysis is sample preparation. In order to obtain excellent TEM image resolution, the samples must be thin (<100 nanometers) and have sufficient contrast. Our analytical TEM lab provides heavy metal staining, microtomy and ultracryomicrotomy sample preparation. Heavy metal staining using materials such as osmium, uranium and ruthenium produces high contrast when imaging co-polymer samples. Ultracryomicrotomy allows us to prepare and cut soft polymers in a temperature-controlled environment. This is extremely useful when many soft materials cannot be cut at room temperature.
