We always say that a picture is worth a thousand words. It perfectly applies in this Method 202 residue study.
The pictures below show a film residue and particles in a Method 202 back half catch stack sample. This catch was heavy, resulting in an out of compliance result. We analyzed the residues to identify the material causing this result. The top picture shows that the particulate was composed primarily of char, fabric and paper fibers and glass fragments, little of which could have originated in the stack emission. The dominant material was a thin film in the residue composed of sulfate salts, an artifact of the method.
