Zinc whiskers are tiny conductive filaments of zinc that grow from metal surfaces that have been electroplated with zinc for corrosion protection. Zinc whiskers are conductive and therefore will cause electrical shorts if they find their way onto electronic circuit boards. Microscopy is the only way to determine if zinc whiskers are present in the dust and therefore may pose a hazard to electrical equipment.
