PBI fiber (stabilized polybenzimidazole polymer) is a high performance fiber produced by Hoechst Celanese Corporation since the early 1980’s. It was initially developed for use in the US space program and is now used in a variety of commercial textile products and industrial applications. The optical properties were determined so the fiber can be quickly and accurately identified utilizing polarized light microscopy. Also included in this paper are Fourier transform infrared data on PBI fiber.
