As a fibrous particle with chemically similar non-fibrous analogs, asbestos requires the use of various types of microscopy for identification and quantification. Methods are available for the analysis of asbestos in bulk samples of building materials, air, water, dust, and soil using polarized light, phase contrast, transmission electron and scanning electron microscopy.
