Routine asbestos laboratories find it helpful to have a range of reference books available when asked to analyze non-routine samples for asbestos. Identifying the non-asbestos matrix of the sample is necessary in designing the best analysis protocol for the sample target analyte. For a sample of strontium chromate, the usual mineral reference books were not helpful but a book on painting materials provided the information needed to identify the matrix of the sample which led to the development of a sensitive analysis protocol.
