This paper discusses the procedures for differentiating between anatase and rutile titanium dioxide using x-ray diffraction, light and electron microscopy. Samples of the same high quality titanium dioxide materials were studied using all three instruments. For electron microscopy the materials were embedded into resin and thin sectioned with an ultramicrotome. Electron diffraction of clusters of particles produced polycrystalline patterns diagnostic of either anatase or rutile. The matches of the diffraction patterns were confirmed using the Noran Search Match computer program containing over 71,000 possible compounds.
