Abstract:
The objective of this study was to characterize mineral wool samples obtained directly from glass insulation manufacturers. The general product composition is presented where available from the manufacturer (rock wool, slag wool, glass wool or a combination thereof). The characterization was performed by polarized light microscopy (PLM) and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDS).
The purpose of the characterization was to determine the variation of refractive index and elemental composition of the mineral wool fibers selected. Glass fibers from World Trade Center (WTC) dust were also characterized using the same procedure.
